  28. Type these words at the Winsafe directory:

  30.   Type              Results will produce
  31. Anti        This will start the virus scanner. This is as good a place
  32.             as any to start looking for problems. This will also
  33.             verify files.
  34.  
  35. Attrib        This can add or remove attribute of files. 
  36.             To learn more type: Attrib /?

  38. Bootlog        This will bring up the Bootlog for viewing, and will search
  39.             the file for failed files.
  40.  
  41. Edit         This command is used for editing a text file such as files of
  42.             bat,txt,ini.
  43.             To learn more type: Edit /?

  45. Help        This will display this portion (Available Commands at DOS)
  46.             of this file with explanations of each command.
  47.  
  48. Ioserror    This command is used to get into Windows if you have an IOS 
  49.             error.
  50.  
  51. Makdisk        This command will create a systems diskette from Dosin the 
  52.             event that you do not have one.
  53.  
  54. More        This command will allow you to read a file a sreen at a time.
  55.             To learn more type: More /?
  56.  
  57. MSD             This will start the MS Diagnosic tool. This tool if used 
  58.             carefully can show you most hardware problems.
  59.             To learn more type: MSD /?

  61. Oldreg        This will install a copy of the Registry created the last 
  62.             time you installed Windows
  63.  
  64. Reboot        This command will reboot the computer.
  65.  
  66. Restore        This will bring up this entire file for viewing
  67.  
  68. Scan        This will start Scandisk to repair any hard drive errors.
  69.             It should bee used as one of the first steps in
  70.             recovering from a crash.
  71. Windows        This command will finish loading windows if you have an
  72.             IOS Error or windows stop loading on you are 
  73.             returned to the DOS Prompt.
  74.     
  75. Winsafe        This will restore all system files with the current 
  76.               backup files and bring up this file for viewing.
  77.             If this command is used be sure to use the 
  78.             RESTORED FROM DOS command on the menu bar item
  79.             RESTORE on winsafe interface when you have recovered.
  80.     
  81. Winsafe1    This will replace the Registry with the Registry 
  82.               stored in Winsafe's safe. This command should only 
  83.             be used after you have used the Winsafe Command.
  84.         
  85. Winstall    If you have placed your cabinet files on the hard 
  86.               drive and selected this option, this will start
  87.               the setup program for Windows95. This is your 
  88.             last hope of recovering without formating.

  93.             WHAT IF I CRASH
  94. 1) If you crash and reboot to Windows do not Backup files until you are
  95.     sure everything is fine. If the system is a little weak you may
  96.     use the RESTORE button. If you have lost the use of your Mouse use
  97.     ALT and the R button then arrow down and Enter.
  98. 2) If you have crashed, you may have rebooted to SAFE MODE: See
  99.     "WHAT TO DO IF ARE IN SAFE MODE" If not reboot again and press the
  100.     F8 key during boot up when you see the "FOR SETUP PRESS F2". Then
  101.     select the SAFE MODE. This should get you To SAFE MODE.Then read
  102.     WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE IN SAFE MODE.
  103. 3) If you find yourself at the DOS prompt and unable to get to SAFE MODE see
  104.         WHAT TO DO IF YOU CANNOT BOOT TO WINDOWS
  105. 4) If you find yourself at neither place: place a reboot diskette in A:\
  106.      and reboot. Wait till the DOS prompt appears and see
  107.         WHAT TO DO IF YOU CANNOT BOOT TO WINDOWS

  110.             IOS ERRORS
  111.     If you get locked out of Windows and get the message IOS Error
  112. then reboot and press the f8 key when you see the STARTING WINDOWS 95
  113. message. Then select log boot and when you are returned to the DOS Prompt
  114. go to the WinSafe directory and type the word Bootlog. WinSafe will the
  115. display the file for viewing. You will be looking for files that failed
  116. to load. Most times you will find a list of fonts near the bottom that 
  117. are probably causing the problem. WinSafe can also display just the file
  118. ythat failed. Follow the on screens instructions.

  121.         HOW TO ACCESS WINSAFE IF IN SAFE MODE
  122.     If you get to Safe Mode and do not have a task bar or icons on
  123. your desktop click on the Windows button on your key board. The
  124. Taskman will appear, click on File and the Run Application. Then use
  125. the browser button in the Run Window that will appear next and find
  126. Winsafty.exe in the WinSafe directory. Then click on utilities and
  127. then Explorer.

  130.         WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE IN SAFE MODE
  131. In case of a crash, enter Windows in Safe Mode and access WinSafe98. 
  132. Click on Restore with current then reboot and select the f8 key the
  133. moment you see Starting Windows and then select #2 (Log boot) at the
  134. menu. You will be able to view this later. After reentering Windows click
  135. on the REPORT button; when WinSafe finishes you may view the changes made to
  136. files. This should be a good start to finding the problem.
  137. If you can, try printing it out. If you are unable to print it out, write
  138. all the information down. Then click the RESTORE button and restart your
  139. computer. You may also select the option of restoring your Old Configuration.
  140. Winsafe will allow you to use the Old Configuration without have backed up
  141. after you have restored using the Restore button. To do this, use the Restore
  142. from Safe command at the menu bar under Restore. WinSafe will only allow you
  143. to restore once with the current backup files then with the Restore from
  144. Safe. You can always restore the current configuration later.
  145. All necessary files will be over written with your backup. If this fixes
  146. your problem you may continue and backup at any time. Remember, once you have
  147. used the Restore feature, WinSafe98 will not allow you to backup until you
  148. have rebooted to Windows successfully (except if you use the Restore from
  149. Safe command).If you still boot into Safe Mode, use the WinSafe command at
  150. the Dos prompt.

  154.         WHAT TO DO IF YOU CANNOT BOOT TO WINDOWS
  155. If you crash to a point that you can only access the C:\>, go to the WinSafe
  156. directory and type  the word WinSafe at the WinSafe directory.
  157. Example:
  158. C:\windows>cd\        (press enter)
  159. C:\>cd\winsafe        (press enter)
  160. C:\WINSAFE>WINSAFE    (press enter)
  161. This instruction file can be opened by typing the word Restore at the dos 
  162. prompt. All necessary files will be over written with your backup and your
  163. Autoexec.bat and the Config.sys will be deleted. These two files can be 
  164. restored later using the restore button. Be sure to read the HOW TO RESTORE
  165.  section first.
  166.  
  167. WinSafe will then reboot your computer.  You will need to fix the problem
  168. that caused the crash before being able to backup or restore. All the vital
  169. files will no longer be hidden until you backup again This means you may
  170. now use Windows to copy files. This is so that you may repair the problem.
  171. If you still cannot boot to Windows, use the
  172. Winsafe1 command at the WinSafe directory.
  173. Example:
  174. C:\windows>cd\        (press enter)
  175. C:\>cd\winsafe        (press enter)
  176. C:\WINSAFE>WINSAFE1    (press enter)
  177. This will then recopy the Registry from the Safe (placed there the day you
  178. installed WinSafe98 or the last time you saved the old configuration) and
  179. your Win.ini and System.ini. If at this point you are still unable to get
  180. into Safe Mode to look for other conflicts (usually at this point it is a
  181. hardware problem), review the available commands from dos.

  183. If none of these help you should then strip your computer of all unnecessary
  184. hardware including PC cards inside the unit that are not essential to operate
  185. (i.e.: modem, scanner, sound cards, etc.). If you still cannot boot to
  186. Windows you will have to reinstall Windows 95. Type the word Winstall at the
  187. WinSafe directory and WinSafe will access your cabinet files. Do not restore
  188. with WinSafe98 after reinstalling Windows. You may manually copy files back
  189. but do not copy back the Registry after you are up and running use the Backup
  190. button first to reset the backup files. If you install a differnt version of
  191. Windows95 you will need to delete the winsafe directory and reinstall it. You
  192. can not use the update feature.

  195.             HOW TO RESTORE
  196. Do not backup until you have repaired the problem!
  197. A good place to start is with the bootlog.txt file, read it for failed
  198. loaded items. You can also read it at the C:\ prompt in DOS using the 
  199. Bootlog command or typing C:\EDIT BOOTLOG.TXT. You may have to reboot
  200. first and create a current bootlog by pressing the f8 key at the Starting 
  201. Windows screen.
  202. After you have booted to Windows in Safe Mode you may compare the SYSTEM
  203. INFORMATION that you saved to the new information that you now have from
  204. the SYSTEM INFORMATION file. Also look at the MSD file and Hardware file.

  206. After you have booted to Windows a couple of times and repaired the problem
  207. you may use the Backup button. 
  208. If you used the WinSafe command, your problem was most likely  a Registry
  209. problem or a driver or hardware conflict. Your Autoexec.bat and Config.sys 
  210. load these drivers.
  211.  
  212. These two files load software and hardware drivers that Windows does not
  213. need to run and all these entries have been made by the software that has
  214. been added. In most cases, you do not need to run an Autoexec.bat or a
  215. Config.sys.
  216. To help find your problem, replace these two files with empty files as 
  217. follows:
  218. open notepad and type the word REM on the top line and save as Autoexec.bat
  219. in the c:\ drive; do the same for the Config.sys. Now copy one line from the
  220. Autoexec.bat or Config.sys that is stored in the WinSafe directory into its'
  221. corresponding empty file and reboot. Repeat this process until you can no
  222. longer boot into Windows successfully. When you get locked out of Windows;
  223. use the WinSafe command, reboot to Windows and fix the problem. Now you can
  224. click restore on WinSafe98. If WinSafe98 will not allow you to restore, go
  225. to the c:\ drive in your Explorer. Scroll down in the right window to
  226. Safe.Exe and double click it. You will now be able to restore without
  227. backing up again.

  230.             VIEWING FILES FROM DOS
  231. To View a text file from the DOS prompt, type EDIT and then the file name.
  232. Example: EDIT HELP.TXT  The file names are INSTALL.TXT, RESTORE.TXT,
  233. TIPS.TXT, and HELP.TXT
